Sleep Hygiene: Forming Healthy Sleep Habits

"Rest Your Head" by Jason Trbovich under CC by 2.0

Restless nights that leave you feeling achy in the morning likely have you wondering how to relieve back pain while sleeping. At DUXIANA® our experts have dedicated themselves to researching back pain and sleep habits in order to craft beds that will help instead of hinder in the pursuit of quality rest.

We know these key facts: that roughly 80% of adults will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives, and that we spend roughly one third of our lives sleeping. Together these realities prove that you cannot afford to ignore the part that your bed might play in causing, or exacerbating, your back pain. Thankfully, the sleep experts at DUXIANA can aid you in your quest to discover how to relieve back pain while sleeping.

Keep Your Spine in Line: Correct Sleep Posture

When you lay down to rest, parts of your body will sink further than others into your average mattress. This can pull your spine out of alignment, disturbing muscles and ligaments that have been working hard all day supporting your spine. A mattress that is too firm can force your shoulders and hips to pinch in and toward each other, while a mattress that is too soft doesn’t offer enough support which can force your spine into a curve in the opposite direction. If you sleep with a curved spine your muscles have to work overtime to protect your spine, which can inhibit circulation, put limbs to sleep and deprive your body of important blood and oxygen flow.  Consider whether your mattress is helping your tired muscles relax, or rather making them work all night to keep your spine in alignment.

Laying on your stomach can sway your lower back in a too-soft mattress: try slipping a thin pillow beneath your stomach and or hips to alleviate this pressure. If you tend to sleep on your side, a pillow between your knees could help prevent your higher leg from falling in front or behind you and twisting your spine. Neither of these solutions however offer a long term fix. As you toss and turn trying to get comfortable you will likely roll away from the pillows supporting you. The best way, then, to relieve back pain while sleeping is to invest in a mattress that will provide continuous, pressure-free comfort from the moment you lay down to the moment your feet hit the floor in the morning.

The DUX® mattress will support your contours no matter what position you prefer to sleep in. If you find that you do need additional support, perhaps due to an injury or during pregnancy, you can swap interchangeable cassettes, part of our patented Pascal® system, to customize your comfort. The DUX 818 even has a lever at the base of each side of the bed that can increase your bed’s lumbar support.

Only a quality bed can offer you the support you need in order to relieve back pain while sleeping. We believe you should make that bed a DUX.
