The Causes of Back Pain

By DUX Design, AB  •  October 20, 2015

The causes of back pain may be varied- poor posture, strenuous activity, injury, or heredity- but the shared common ground is in the life-altering stress and unrest back pain can cause for so many. Many of the common causes are more serious and chronic than the effects of hard work or poor posture. Back pain is generally not a diagnosis in and of itself but rather a symptom of other conditions.

For many, sleeping on a mattress that provides proper support can have substantial payoffs. Whether you need to get rid of a worn-out mattress or you're simply sleeping on the wrong style, choose a new bed that will support your spine health and help you get better quality rest.

The best way to begin to address back pain is to consider the cause - find some of the most common causes below:

1.     Sciatia

Sciatica is characterized as pain that radiates down the leg from the back and is frequently the result of a spinal disc herniation. This herniation presses on the lumbar or sacral nerve roots. But there are many other reasons one might suffer from sciatica such as pregnancy, spinal stenosis, or pelvic tumors. Surprisingly, for most people sciatica will clear up on its own after several weeks. But those weeks will undoubtedly be easier to bear with a supportive and comfortable mattress like the DUX 1001. All DUX beds are designed to be the best mattress for back pain.

2.    Spinal Stenosis

This condition is an abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal. This restriction of the spinal canal can occur anywhere in the spine and can result in a pain, numbness, paraesthesia and even loss of motor control. Lumbar and cervical stenosis are the most common form of this cause of back pain. Spinal stenosis can be caused by arthritis, hereditary issues or simply aging among others.

3.     Herniated Disc (Slipped Disc)

One of the most common causes of back pain are injuries like herniated discs. Spinal disc herniation occurs when a tear in the outer fibrous ring of a disc allows the soft, inner part to bulge out. Minor injuries will heal in a matter of weeks but severe herniated discs may require intervention like surgery or physical therapy. Don't let common causes of back pain like herniated discs keep you from a good night's rest – after all, sleep is an important part of healing injuries successfully. A DUX bed can help you sleep well despite pain from herniated discs.

4.     Lumbar Pain

Sometimes referred to as "lumbago," lower back pain may be acute (lasing less than 6 weeks), sub-chronic (6-12 weeks) or chronic (longer than 12 weeks). Lumbar pain may be caused by mechanical causes (such as muscle or joint strain), non-mechanical issues, or it could even be referred pain. Lumbar pain is one of the most common causes of back pain. If you are one of the many sufferers of lower back pain don't let your old bed add to your troubles. Something that you spend so much time in is worth upgrading. Consider a DUX bed, designed to offer support and relief from back pain as well as luxury.

5.     Degenerative Disc Disease

This condition is the degeneration of one or more intervertebral discs in the spine and can cause acute or chronic lower back pain. The medical community isn't quite sure what causes degenerative disc disease although it is related to aging. This disease can severely affect the quality life of sufferers when left untreated. Thankfully most cases of degenerative disc disease can be treated without surgery.

6.     Scoliosis

This condition is a curvature of the spine which can be caused by a number of factors. It can be congenital or related to another condition such as cerebral palsy or spina bifida. For some however there is no known cause of scoliosis, often these cases are caught at the onset of adolescence. This spinal curvature can vary from just a few degrees to more severe s-curves. This abnormal curvature can put pressure on muscles and joints alike and cause back pain. A DUX bed can help provide optimal sleep posture and spinal alignment through dynamic contouring and support.

7.     Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be uncomfortable for many women and for many different reasons, but roughly half of women will experience some level of back pain during pregnancy. For some women this back pain is particularly troublesome at night, becoming severe enough to wake them or simply increased while in bed. DUX beds are the best mattress for pregnancy, with component systems that can be reconfigured to compensate for body changes during pregnancy and after.

Consider a DUX bed to help relieve back pain – our beds are designed to offer continuous, pressure-free support for both healthy and ailing backs alike. Spare yourself restless, uncomfortable nights so that you and your back can get the rest you need to heal and recover.
