Your sleeping position during pregnancy may well be very different from what you're used to. Pregnancy alters your body and its weight distribution, even while you're lying down. In order to feel comfortable, you might need different types of support as you explore new sleeping positions during pregnancy.

Research has suggested that poor sleep during pregnancy is linked to complications such as pre-term birth and low birth weight. When a pregnant woman's sleep is constantly disrupted, her immune system may be negatively affected which could increase the likelihood of birth complications.

Researchers at the University of California at San Francisco found that women who slept fewer than 6 hours per night were more likely to experience longer labors and cesarean section deliveries. Clearly, quality of sleep is important for pregnant women and can affect outcomes for both mother and baby.

The right mattress can help alleviate back pain caused by pregnancy and support a more comfortable sleep position allowing you the rest you need. The DUX® Bed’s innovative component design may make it the best pregnancy bed available. With support that you can customize as your pregnancy develops, The DUX Bed can provide continuous, pressure-free support as your body changes through pregnancy – and back again.

You've always slept the same way each night…until now

Maybe you've always been a stomach or back sleeper, but now you're finding it difficult to rest easy in your favorite sleeping position. Some sleeping positions during pregnancy can cause back pain, shortness of breath and even heartburn. Now that your abdomen has changed and expanded, you may feel uncomfortable as this added weight puts new and different pressures on your spine and even on your lungs and heart. Additionally, sleeping on your stomach is just physically impossible in the later months of your pregnancy.

Avoid these sleep positions during pregnancy:

  1. Sleeping on your stomach is out of the question after a certain point in your pregnancy.
  2. Avoid sleeping on your back. The weight of your abdomen can put undue pressure on your spine as well as your intestines and may be constricting major blood vessels. This can cause decreased circulation as well as back pain.

The best sleep position during pregnancy

There are conflicting opinions on whether it's best to sleep on your right or left side during pregnancy.  Regardless, side sleeping is recommended as the best sleeping position during pregnancy whether you prefer one side to the other or switch throughout the night. However, sleeping on your side can easily put your spine out of alignment, especially if you sleep on a mattress that lacks support or is too firm. Even if your mattress is relatively new, the added weight of your expanding belly will cause your hips to sink deep into your mattress, pulling your lower back out of alignment with the rest of your spine. During the day, your lower back takes enough strain – sleeping shouldn’t cause more.

The DUX Bed customizable component design is designed to evolve with your changing needs throughout your pregnancy. It can support side sleeping and can be easily customized to provide enhanced support where you need it most. The DUX bed is crafted of separate spring components, known as the patented Pascal® Cassette System. Simply unzip the bed to expose the cassettes. Switch the support cassettes around, perhaps to provide more support under your hips, or swap them out for different cassettes that offer varying densities and tensions. Adjust your support throughout your pregnancy (and beyond) to help relieve back pain and offer quality support for side sleeping, the best sleep position during pregnancy.
